The Garmin PDA range comprises sleek and sophisticated handhelds boasting a combination of outstanding PDA features and integrated GPS functionality. A Garmin PDA is extremely covetable. The Garmin PDA 3600 was the first PDA ever to include integrated GPS technology. Successive models just keep making this functionality more user-friendly and efficient. The M5 Garmin PDA is the latest GPS-PDA combination offering, and runs Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. It is powered by an Intel 416-MHz PXA272 XScale processor and has 64mb each of RAM and ROM. A dedicated 48-MHz ARM7 co-processor handles GPS chores. A Bluetooth adapter allows you to connect to compatible phones. If you want to activate the GPS, you just extend the antenna nestled at the back of the unit and the device begins to search for the satellite signals it needs. The software can be a bit complicated to use, but that’s because the functions the handheld is performing are complicated. You can mount this funky PDA on your windshield for maximum exposure – to satellite signals. The M5 Garmin PDA is pricy but in this case you definitely get what you pay for. Shop around – prices range from $550 to over $700. The bundled software includes regular PDA software you’d expect to find shipped with the device and specialized GPS software. Users can choose a configurable base map of North America, South America, Europe, or regions in the Pacific Rim. Patent pending contact-locator software allows you to look up appointments and contacts in the Address Book and then it locates and routes you to them with voice-guidance commands.
