The shopping jury is still out on buying ‘secondhand’ or ‘pre-owned’ computer goods, like a refurbished PDA, for instance. While a refurbished PDA is secondhand, it is not in the same category as other used goods. You should look at buying refurbished devices as similar to buying new treads instead of new tires for your car; not as taking over someone’s used tires. A refurbished PDA is a PDA that has been repaired so that, while it’s not new (and therefore cheaper), it’s “like new”; it’s just that the seller can’t legally sell it as new. Refurbished PDA’s are often devices with problems that were easily identified and fixed, but, due to the covering warranty on the original device, the customer was given a replacement device. It makes sense that with the glut of new models in the PDA market and stiff competition, there is an ever increasing turnover of PDA’s and therefore and an expanding secondhand market for mobile devices. Unfortunately, there are many unscrupulous dealers around, but, if you shop smart, you can find a refurbished PDA that will give you years of service. Many dealers offer reasonable warranties as well as after sales backup and support. The internet is the easiest place to find a refurbished PDA. Unfortunately, it’s also the place where you have the most chance of being duped, unless you buy from a manufacturer’s site. In the latter case, however, you may find the prices are very similar to that of new equipment. It’s a matter of balancing the risk of ending up with a dud against finding a real bargain.
