The Palm Tungsten W was Palm’s first entry into the cellular phone field and its advanced features make it still an excellent option for mobile professionals who are looking for a PIM (Personal Information Manager), laptop and cell phone in one. The Palm Tungsten W is a tri-band GSM/GPRS world phone with an impressive 10 hours of talk time; all the software you need for office computing on the go, including 5-way conferencing; and an excellent battery life that won’t leave you high and dry before you get to your destination. The battery has a whopping 250 hours of standby time. Any application that requires an Internet connection will automatically cause the Palm Tungsten W to establish a GPRS connection, which takes anywhere from 20-40 seconds, but you can switch to the Phone application at any point or pick up incoming calls. The device has no microphone or earpiece of its own - it makes voice calls using the included ear bud microphone. There’s a hands-free headset so you can work while you’re taking or making a call. Weighing in at what some may say is a somewhat hefty 184 grams due to the size of the battery; the sturdiness of the Palm Tungsten W actually seems to make the device more user-friendly. For one thing, it’s easier to type than on some of the smaller, currently more trendy, handhelds. The Palm Tungsten W features a smaller version of the much-loved Navigator D-Pad found on the Palm Tungsten T and has a “thumb board” with three rows of keys you can use as a regular keyboard or access easily with one hand using your thumb.
