The Palm Tungsten T - also known as the M550 or TT - was Palm’s first device to run the Palm OS 5 on an ARM architecture processor. The Palm Tungsten T quickly built up a loyal following with an impressive array of features, including a high-resolution screen, advanced multimedia capabilities, more memory and a faster processor than its predecessors, and innovative navigation options. The Palm Tungsten T was described and marketed as a high-end model. It wasn’t cheap when it first launched, and was aimed at executives and power-users on the go; therefore the emphasis on one-handed functionality. This was facilitated by one of the key new features of the TT: the D-pad which replaced the former up and down buttons. This control provided 4-way navigation with a press-to-select domed center button. The standard application buttons lay on either side of the D-pad. When the device was off, a short press of the Select button popped up the time and date for a couple of seconds then shut down, or you could double-click the Select button to power on. To switch to the application launcher screen, you held down the Select button for two seconds. The Palm Tungsten T scored a first on a number of features for Palm OS devices. It was the first Palm OS device to feature a nifty sliding front panel which could slide up in Compact mode and when slid down revealed the writing area. The TT in Compact mode became the shortest Palm OS device built up to that point. Another first for the Palm Tungsten T was being the first Palm OS device to have Bluetooth 1.1 support integrated into the device. Out of the box, it supported the Dial-up Networking profile for connecting to the Internet through a GSM/GPRS mobile phone.
