There's no excuse to be playing solitaire or copying data from your pocket PC to your desktop machine to work on when there is such a huge range of pocket PC applications that make work and fun easy and stimulating when you're on the go. For the technically minded and those looking for a new hobby there are a growing number of options to develop your own pocket PC applications. For instance, Microsoft's Visual Tools - comprising embedded Visual Basic (eVB) and embedded Visual C++ (eVC++) programming languages - allows you to develop mobile applications for Windows CE-based pocket PC, Palm-size PC and handheld PC's. You can download this software free from Microsoft. If you want to use C# and .Net, you'll have to pay. Programming for pocket PCs is a challenge as pocket PC specifications vary, but help is at hand. There are numerous Internet sites that show you how to write your own simple (or complicated) games or pocket PC applications. You can download various utilities to help you create databases, as well as test your applications and make them look professional. When creating games you'll need the Pocket PC Game API software and, preferably a game library too. Don't forget to make use of the Microsoft web site, which offers developers a wealth of technical advice, and check out the technical programming forums where you can ask questions, or, if inclined, give advice.
