Touted as the Palm-killer, the Casio BE-300 is not a pocket PC, but may well be the next best thing. Some enthusiasts are saying it's better! The Casio BE-300 is marketed as a pocket manager. It's an organizer and mini-PC and runs Casio's version of the Windows CE operating system. It is said to be Casio's challenge to Palm's up-to-now domination of the pocket PC market. The Casio BE-300 is aimed at the mobile professional businessperson, but anyone who can't afford one of the top-of-the-range pocket PC models will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of this alternative. But why a pocket manager and not a pocket PC? The answer is price. The Casio BE-300 is a cost-effective alternative to the average pocket PC. So, it does lack certain features. For instance, it doesn't come with Pocket Word, but a file viewer allows you to read Word files. There's also no infrared port or external speakers. And memory (Flash Rom rather than Ram for the techies out there) is also somewhat less that with conventional pocket PC's. But as an entry-level PDA or 'toe-dipper', at the price, it's all many of us will ever want or need. Many reviewers claim there is little they can't do with their Casio BE-300, besides perhaps voice recording. And if you need extra software, it's simple enough to add, for instance, a spreadsheet program, or you can download software from the Internet. With many users out there tired of paying high prices for pocket PC's, the BE-300 has gathered a loyal following. There are plenty of sites that cater specifically for Casio BE-300's. In fact, I've seen sites where software prices have been reduced to encourage people to hang on to this useful little baby.
