A handheld GPS (global positioning system) can be used for many purposes. Many people use a handheld GPS in the car, work out and exercise programs, as a personal trainer and in the out door for hiking.

When looking for a handheld GPS for your vehicle, here are some important features to look out for:

  • Does the GPS provide maps of the cities and towns in the areas you want to use it?
  • Can you upgrade the GPS maps, when later versions come out?
  • Can it calculate estimated time of arrival and other calculations?
  • Does the device have voice prompting for giving directions?
  • Is it able to calculate shortest distance, shortest route etc?
  • Does it have an address book to hold locations?
  • How do you interact with the handheld i.e. with a keypad or touch screen?
  • Are you able to program in waypoints?

When looking for a handheld GPS for exercise and workout programs, here are some important features to look out for:

  • Can the handheld calculate pace, training time, distance, lap time, lap pace, lap distance, elevation, average pace and calories?
  • How much training history can the device store?
  • Does it have the facility to have a virtual partner i.e. for running or cycling against?
  • Are you able to set an alarm if you go too fast or to slow?
  • Is it waterproof?
  • Is it small enough to fit on your wrist?
  • Can it map your progress on the display?

When looking for a handheld GPS for exercise and workout programs, here are some important features to look out for:

  • Is it able to calculate your speed and elevation?
  • Does it have a moving or static map display?
  • Are you able to load maps on to it?
  • Is it waterproof?
  • Can you set waypoints?
  • Does it come with a carry case?
  • How often is the GPS display updated?
  • What temperatures can it operate in?

Here are some general questions you might ask yourself when purchasing any handheld GPS:

  • How accurate is the GPS? I.e. to within how many meters?
  • Is the display color or monotone?
  • How large is the screen?
  • Does the handheld come with a battery? If so how long will it last?
